R. A Kartini
2018 | Acrylic on canvas | 30.5 x 30.5 cm
The Rise of the Phoenix – El Ascenso Del La Fenix, Fredric Jameson Gallery, Duke University, USA
The painting titled R.A Kartini is a tribute to Raden Adjeng Kartini and her legacy that still continues until today inspiring many Indonesian women in the area of education and women’s emancipation. Every year, Indonesia celebrates Kartini’s birth date, 21st April as “Kartini Day” in remembrance of her life journey of struggle, hope and ambition in the fight for equality, freedom to learn and study for Javanese women.
“Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang” was a book compilation of letters written by Kartini that she sent to her friends in Europe, depicting the struggles of Javanese woman who faced with tradition, social culture and conditions imposing obstacles and women’s development that prevailing at that time. After she died, her letters were collected and published by Mr. J.H. Abendanon, titled Door Duisternis tot Licht
(Out of Dark Comes Light) in 1911.
I hope this artwork serves as inspiration to many who are struggling in pursuing what they believe in and hope for a change in lives. However, I believe as we persevere walking through these struggles, take courage that one day we will see light at the end of the tunnel.

Statement:
I used to think of maps as merely just part of geography lesson which has its function to identify and gives information about certain places. However in this work, I am attracted to the aesthetics of the natural shapes of islands which are the result of the shifting and changing of earth from time to time. Coming from Indonesia, I am particularly drawn to the islands of Indonesia which gives me an idea in a new way of looking at the disparate and scattered islands that make up Indonesia.
Through interpreting these shapes and parts of Indonesia into a drawing filled with different colours that I associate with childhood woodblock toys, I wish to evoke a sense of nostalgia and memory of the country which I grew up in.
The painting is featured in Cartographic Desire Exhibition at Project Space, LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore on 11 - 25 August 2011, curated By Hazel Lim

Bali is My Life - The Travelogue Project
2011| mixed media on wood | dimensions variable
Fascinated with the figurative sculpture, crafts, and shadow puppet from the observation during Bali trip in February 2011, in this project, I am presenting a new way of looking shadow puppet which incorporates traditional culture aesthetic and value with contemporary theme and approach by creating self expression of own imagination characters that originated from the inspiration and experiences in Bali trip.
The way of performing the puppets is similar play with the string puppet and shadow puppet (wayang kulit) with showing the aesthetic in front of the screen and engages the viewers’ attention. The works are created to bring the notion of narrative and storytelling through the artist and artworks.
"Ani Wayang" is featured in Noise Singapore Festival Showcase 2012 at B4 ION Orchad, Singapore on 16 Feb - 4 Mar 2012.
